Nevada sits right in the middle of this area. Because Nevada has been stretching out for the past 20 million years, lots of sediment has been deposited in the basins between the ranges, preserving abundant animal remains. In western Nevada we have been digging up exceptionally preserved ecosystems which were preserved at the north end of Fish Lake Valley in the shadow of the White-Inyo Mountains. Four-tusked elephants, horses, rhinos, camels, peccarys, and carnivores. Some of these animals are so well preserved we have found a first in the history of paleontology in North America, 16 million year old maggots!
